Videotape Reveals Nursing Home Abuse, New York Auto Accident Lawyer Applauds Victim's Son
A hidden camera inside a nursing home catches nursing aides abusing Steve Piskor's 78 year old mother.

NEW YORK, NY, July 17, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Steve Piskor captured the abuse of his 78 year old mother, Esther on a video camera hidden inside a nursing home in Ohio recently. David Perecman, a New York personal injury lawyer who handles New York nursing home abuse and elder abuse cases commends Piskor for his initiative.

"Piskor suspected his mother was a victim of nursing home abuse and when he felt he wasn't being taken seriously he went further in an effort to stop the abuse," said Perecman, a New York personal injury lawyer with knowledge of nursing home abuse and elder abuse issues. "It's admirable he didn't just give up and let it go."

The videos show two nurses aides at the Prentiss Center for Skilled Nursing Care hitting Esther in the face, shoving her into a wall and violently throwing her into her bed.

Piskor installed the camera to prove his mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, was a victim of nursing home abuse.

The videos led to both criminal and regulatory investigations as well as questions about whether administrators ignored complaints by Piskor that his mother was being abused in the nursing home.

Piskor said he told administrators months ago that his mother had unexplained marks on her face and that she raised her hands in a protective manner when he approached. He also complained that workers were leaving the window open and turning off the heat in the middle of the winter.

Ignored and branded a troublemaker by the health care facility, Piskor hid a camera inside a fan and placed it strategically in his mother' room. He also put up a sign warning nursing home employees that a camera was installed in the room.

According to Piskor, it took only two days to see the nursing home abuse. He then left the camera running for two months so MetroHealth, the company that runs the nursing home, would be unable to dismiss the abuse as an isolated incident.

Elder abuse and nursing home abuse are national problems. Each day, hundreds of elders in New York and elsewhere are victimized.

"If a family member thinks something is wrong, he or she shouldn't hesitate to speak up. The first step is to recognize the types, signs and symptoms of nursing home abuse," said Perecman, a New York personal injury lawyer with experience helping victims of nursing home abuse and elder neglect.

Nursing home abuse in New York takes a variety of forms including negligent care, verbal abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and financial exploitation.

"Tragic consequences can result from a lack of appropriate care in a nursing home. People in nursing homes are a frail and vulnerable population," said New York personal injury lawyer Perecman.

The signs of nursing home abuse and elder abuse are often subtle and seniors who are being abused frequently fail to report the nursing home abuse.

If an elderly loved one has been subjected to nursing home abuse in New York, families may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit including a wrongful death suit if the nursing home abuse has led to death. To do this, families need and deserve a New York personal injury lawyer experienced with personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits involving elder abuse and nursing home abuse in New York. An experienced personal injury lawyer can make a big difference in the fight for the rights of victims of nursing home abuse and elder abuse.
